How I'd build a small-business site in Nigeria: Lovable vs a free Cloudflare site

Two honest routes to getting a Nigerian small business online: describe it to Lovable's AI builder, or hand-build a free site on Cloudflare. What each is good at, what it costs, and which I'd pick.

How I'd build a small-business site in Nigeria: Lovable vs a free Cloudflare site

Most Nigerian small businesses I know live on WhatsApp and Instagram. That works until a customer asks "do you have a website?" or you want people to find you on Google. Here are the two routes I'd actually consider, as someone who has built NaijaStack and a WhatsApp order bot on Cloudflare.

Route 1: Lovable (describe it, AI builds it)

Lovable is an AI app builder. You describe what you want in plain English and it generates a working web app (frontend, backend, database, login and integrations) backed by real code you can edit. Per Lovable's own docs:

  • You own the code. Projects can sync to GitHub, GitLab or Bitbucket, so you are not locked in.
  • It publishes to a live URL when you're ready.
  • It goes beyond brochure sites: booking tools, storefronts, client portals, dashboards and AI features like chatbots.
  • Pricing is by credits, not seats. The free plan gives 5 build credits a day (up to 30 a month). Small edits cost under 1 credit; Lovable's own example says a full landing page with generated images costs about 1.7 credits. Paid plans add a monthly credit balance. Check lovable.dev/pricing for the current plan prices in your region.
  • Students with a valid university email can claim a discount at lovable.dev/students.

Good for: a business owner who can't code and wants a booking page, a product catalogue or a simple customer portal this week. Also for students and freelancers who want to prototype a client project fast.

Watch out for: credits get used up as you iterate, so plan your prompts. Write down exactly what you want (pages, prices, WhatsApp number, delivery areas) before you start. And always test the site on a cheap Android phone on mobile data, because that's how your customers will see it.

Route 2: A free Cloudflare site (you build it)

This is how NaijaStack runs. Cloudflare Workers has a free plan that comfortably covers a small business site. You write (or copy) HTML and CSS, deploy with drag-and-drop or the Wrangler command line, and connect a domain.

Good for: people willing to learn a little code, who want near-zero running costs and full control.

Watch out for: there's a learning curve. Forms, databases and logins take real work, which is exactly what Lovable automates.

Which would I pick?

  • "I need it live this week and I can't code": Lovable. Start on the free plan, build the first version, and only upgrade if you need more credits.
  • A simple info page and I want to learn: Cloudflare, free.
  • Both: prototype the design in Lovable, sync the code to GitHub, and learn from what it generated. That's an honest way to learn how real web apps are put together.

A simple prompt to start with in Lovable

Build a mobile-first website for a Lagos bakery called [name]. Pages: home with best-sellers, a menu with prices in naira, an order form that sends the order to WhatsApp [number], delivery areas, and opening hours. Clean design, fast on mobile data.

Then iterate: "make the buttons bigger", "add a testimonials section", "add Google Maps for the shop".
